form. counterform.

This project is called form/counterform. The ultimate goal was to explore the formal qualities of different letters from seven different typefaces. Visualizing different letterform features and the space occupied helped understand and identify connotative qualities in typefaces.

To discover and appreciate typefaces, I explored the seven typefaces and created multiple iterations using six different letters as 'tasty bits'. Using different tasty bits, the next step was to create a composition and express a distinct visual hierarchy. First step was to practice with black and white letterforms then using CMYK colors and overprint feature to create more eye-catching final design.
(above) Final poster design in a frame and is using eight different letters in seven different typefaces. Only CMY colors used to create more colors using overprint methods. The title of the work is 'gravity'. The inspiration was from a drop of water falling down due to gravity. The letterforms are pointing downwards using on its own design and negative space to focus on my name & title at the end of the water drop.

(below) A collection of multiple iterations of tasty bits and some alternative designs in black and white. In order to explore and familiarize with different typefaces, a tasty bit templet was used. The template has six different cells to explore the form and counterform of letters, and for each typeface, the typeface's name, year it created, classification, personality description, and an occupation if it were to be a human.
A mockup of a book cover (dust jacket): using the final poster design as the basis, another design was created. It focuses on the water drop more than the actual poster itself.
A mockup of a milk carton packaging: similar to the the book cover mockup, the final poster design was used. The one on the left side focuses more on multiple colors and overprint used in the design and the one on the right focuses on the title 'gravity'.
A mockup of a pillow: this mockup displays what the design would look like if it didn't show the water drop and the letters not point downwards. It would make the audience question why the design was named 'gravity'.
A mockup of a large scaled banner: it portrays the final composition of tasty bits and expresses a distinct visual hierarchy and negative space well.
